Art at the Centre 2007

Cittadellarte recognises the question of ecology as one of the main factors of the global crisis.

Recently it has initiated creative projects aimed to stimulate a change in the direction of sustainability (like the Centre for Creative Reuse, ReMidaBiella or the project C.Ambie.R.E.Sti in partnership the Province of Biella).

It is within this environment that the tenth edition of “Art at the Centre of a Socially Responsible Transformation” is launched carving a path of research and awareness of materials and their eco-sustainable products, Turning Point Products, the results of a worthy synergy between advanced technology and responsibility regarding the environment.

Italia in Persona, represented by the installations on exhibition, activates and diffuses the cultural mission of the Italian product, through a new socio-economic model that places the person at the centre of the whole value system that sustains it.
At its base is the idea that Italian industrial production possess an intrinsic characteristic that differentiates and elevates it from the rest of the world’s manufacturers and producers: that of having the person as privileged point of reference and recipient. More

The installation by Michelangelo Pistoletto Love Difference - The Mediterranean Seas, is made up of a series of interactive and didactic tables dedicated to the theme of recycling.

Disposed around each table are various coloured cylinders, called Geographies of Transformation, which represent the international network of entities that develop projects that address a socially responsible transformation of society.

“Beginning with the idea of the sea which is named the Mediterranean Sea, we extend the concept of Loving Differences to planet level, enlarging our vision towards other “Mediterranean seas” of the world. Each one gathers around itself historic and contemporary realities of different cultures relative to different countries. The name Mediterranean has a common meaning to all the seas that are surrounded by land, unlike the oceans and open waters which do not have defined perimeters.”

Michelangelo Pistoletto

ReMidaBiella is a place where the idea of reusing industrial leftovers is promoted. In the ReMidaBiella shop/warehouse in Cittadellarte, alternative and recovered materials that are the leftovers of industrial and artisan production are gathered, displayed and made available. Through workshops and didactic activities one can learn to reinvent these materials and their meaning, creating new objects from industrial remnants. More

The C.Ambie.R.E.Sti (Consumption - Environment - Saving - Energy - Lifestyles) project was initiated in 2006 by the Environmental Department of the Province of Biella from the experiences of the pilot project by the Venice Municipality.
The project aims to educate people about environmental and economic savings, focussing attention on the global impact of individual choices through a process of awareness and co-responsible actions and the stimulation of new good practices and different modes of consumption (such as the saving and the more efficient use of energy and natural resources), using solutions and innovative technologies.

In exhibition in Cittadellarte, four tables of recycled paper are points of meeting and debate on themes relating to a sustainable environment: water, food, home, energy, fair trade, ethical saving and investment, mobility, refuse and tourism.

The mission of turning point products is to spread awareness and knowledge about materials of natural, renewable and recyclable origins for architecture and eco-design through the creativity of art.

The exhibition proposes a real alternative to the use of materials that are petro-chemically based, through the classification and exhibition of eco-sustainable products that are necessary for the construction and re-qualification of an architecture that is ethically, culturally and technically aimed towards turning the territory, city and home into a living organism. This living organism is part of a greater ecological system which can recapture the natural equilibrium by making citizens aware and encouraging a critical and knowledgeable consumption towards a product that unites high quality with social responsibility.

In other words it aims to create a path of research and increasing awareness of materials and eco-sustainable objects (the Turning Point Products in fact) that are the results of a virtuous synergy between advanced technology and responsibility regarding the environment. These materials can be a valid alternative in the art of construction and are already widely used in natural architecture and eco-design. Some of these materials have been chosen to create mini architecture that can be seen, touched, smelled and experienced through the attempt to produce a strong sense of awareness in the visitor. Such products present a brand of environmental quality and have been provided by different companies. The exhibition space has also been set up in the form of a real recycled supermarket as a daily response to environmental change. The materials for natural architecture on show in Turning Point Products are logically laid out relating from the structure of a building, through insulation, installation and finishing, right through to furnishing. The aim was to cover all levels of the architectural project planning of a building, giving valid examples of natural materials for each phase.

Along side the research and publicising of materials and their eco-sustainable products, the exhibition aims to be a reference point for the biellese territory and beyond, available for whoever wants to deepen their knowledge, better understand and buy natural architecture products.

The coaster for beer is made from bamboo and is a perfect complement for a glass of Menabrea Beer; it includes a small tool - a little stick in the shape of a bottle - for eating small snacks during happy hour.
Both products are made from sustainable and ecological materials that enhance and communicate the values of Menabrea Beer.

Britt Leissler
Brit Leissler was born in Stuttgart, Germany. She studied design at the Koeln International School of Design as well as the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and has worked in communication & interface design as well as design management for various companies in Germany and Switzerland before coming to London in 2005. Here she graduated in June 2007 from the Royal College of Art with a master degree in product design, studying under Ron Arad and Jurgen Bey. Since she graduated last summer from the Royal College of Art she has been busily engaged in establishing her own London based ”Shoot the Stylist!“ design studio, and has undertaken design consultancy and commissioned work for the BBC, Vodafone, Lago Spa. (Italy) and others. She asks the question how to add value to the experience of design, using an eclectic alchemy of different mediums and disciplines to combat the monotony of urban life: Combining tactility driven product design with film making, performance, graphic design and music, she seeks to place Art & Commerce in bed together to create beautiful bastard children. Her work is highly conceptual with a strong playful and emotional flavour, delivering its own unique style signature. It has been exceptionally well received at international exhibitions and in both, magazine and online features.

"Italy is still a collection of many independent states; a united Kingdom of Italy the dream of a few patriots. Biella, a bustling little township made prosperous by the woollen industry, belongs to the Kingdom of Sardinia. It was in this year that Mr. Welf of Gressoney and his brothers Antonio and Gian Battista Caraccio, natives of Bioglio and cafe proprietors in Biella, founded a brewery. This was the beginning of a marvelous entrepreneurial adventure that would endure until today, spanning a period of over 150 years".
Volta is a pen whose form itself rotates, like a symbol of turning point design.
The material it is made from consists of 90-95% recycled coffee grinds (symbol of the Italian roots of the company) and the remaining 5% is made from a poly resin necessary to bind and seal it. It is completely biodegradable. The logo of Aurora is present, but is 180° rotated: a sign that reflects the values of the company who are in favour of a completely sustainable transformation through materials and production.

Aurora Due
AURORA. SINCE 1919 - ITALIAN PASSION, SIGN OF DISTINCTION
Aurora, a leading brand in the production and sale of writing instruments, luxury leather goods and paper, was founded in Turin in 1919. Throughout its history the company remained strongly linked to the values that have made it an international market leader: the passion for beauty and style, along with a commitment to quality up to the tiniest detail.
The company has leaded the development of writing instruments as a historical Piemontese factory, always maintaining the right balance between artisan craftsmanship and technology and creating unique products.
Production phases managed by computerised processes come up beside other steps performed according to the traditional methods used by master goldsmiths. The choice of precious metals and materials (gold, silver, mother of pearl, rubies, etc.) makes every pen a real jewel.
The Verona family, which leads the company, has been involved in writing business for more than four generations.
Today Aurora is the only authentic Italian brand in the sector and it is a byword for Italian excellence in the field of luxury goods in more than 50 countries around the world. It has a single production plant in Turin covering an area of 10,000 square metres and it employs about 100 people.
A house tap can carry more than 10 litres.
When left running to brush your teeth, more than 30 litres run through the sink without even being used.
Avoiding waste is the best way to save. This tap has 2 systems for turning on, specifically to manage the saving of water in a simpler and more responsible way.
It can be turned on normally, as usual, but it can also be opened with a pressure system allowing only what is necessary to pass through.

Neve Rubinetterie
NEVE RUBINETTERIE ....the history
NEVE RUBINETTERIE was founded in San Maurizio d’Opaglio, renown for being the Taps Italian capital, in 1953. In 2004 Neve Rubinetterie moved to its new site in Gozzano, in the Taps Industrial District. Since its foundation NEVE RUBINETTERIE has always been a manufacturer of taps and sanitary fittings.
A museum, built in the basement, shows the company’s history. The company’s inclination to evolve has enabled NEVE RUBINETTERIE to keep up with the new needs and requests from a market always on the move. More than fifty years of experience, along with top quality, long lasting raw materials and components are some of Neve’s points of strength. Severe control procedures along the whole production process grant the high quality of every single component. All NEVE RUBINETTERIE’s products are covered by a five year warranty and comply with the DNV - ISO 9001 Vision 2000 requirements.
The wide range of products engineered by the Company’s Technical Staff in collaboration with different designers, enable NEVE RUBINETTERIE to be successful on both national and international markets.
On-going research and the willingness to diversify the production style in order to recognise the company in a well defined brand have brought NEVE RUBINETTERIE to invest in research and innovation since 1998. Despite being small (13 emplyees today), the company has been investing in research and development of new materials and technology by its own means, in line with its philosophy. Today NEVE RUBINETTERIE is involved in establishing an image corresponding to the contemporary Italian style.

When we talk about taps, it is mandatory to confront the problem of water saving. Everyone knows how precious water has become, but without visual evidence, it is difficult to realise how much water we are consuming in our daily behaviour. The designer created a tap able to quantify the carrying of water in one minute using a simple graduated scale, thus giving instant information to the user and making him/her much more aware of his/her actions.

Webert Rubinetterie
Over the last years with globalisation, each body involved in manufacturing or other, had to and has to face new and complex problems. Webert started a long time ago taking the difficult path of flexibility, of service and style innovation, being convinced that they would become over time major elements of selection of the offer by economic operators. Thus, contributing all possible efforts of all the “working community” that forms the Webert group, many customers and new markets started progressively testing our products and experimenting the relationship with the group , confirming every day their faith in us. This is the most rewarding result that urges us into carrying on with the logics of continuous improvement mainly in relationships with all stakeholders, and in addition keeping on with what we’ve been doing for such a long time with technical and qualitative innovation of products.

The "Green Light" collection is made up of a travel bag, a sports bag, a woman’s handbag and a makeup bag.
All are made from real Italian leather, whose quality is guaranteed by the patented Fibercuir®, the bags are resistant and long lasting, thanks to an anti-mark and water repellent treatment to the leather. The form of a traffic light, that runs through all four accessories, turns our attention towards the safeguarding of the environment and the territory, intrinsic values for the Made in Italy culture and the philosophy that guides the activities of Cittadellarte. A traffic light lit on green allows you to proceed “turning on the green light” means to choose the road towards ecology.

Design by Cittadellarte & Andrea Artusio per Nuova Conceria Chiorino e Zani del Frà

Andrea Artusio
Andrea Artusio born in Turin 07-03-1980. In 2004 he entered the Industrial Design course at I.A.A.D of Turin. During the three years, through various projects and thanks to some of his professors, he gained the following: third place in the competition ChoccoDay with presentation of his work in Perugia as part of the Eurochocolate exhibition; publication in the monthly “Il Punto” of an article on a method of transport shown at the Museo dei Campionissimi di Novi Ligure; exhibition in Via Garibaldi, Turin, of the prototype of an eco-compatible rucksack conceived with recovered materials. On the 7th of July 2007 he discusses his thesis on the evolution of clothing and new performance possibilities. This project called “Klumi” takes as a specific example a winter sport jacket (not just a jacket) that if need be can become a rucksack. Thus commercial and cultural aspects are touched upon with particular attention reserved for materials and their characteristics. Currently working for Robe by Kappa in Kappa Footwear.

Nuova Conceria Chiorino
Chiorino, in Biella, since 1906. Leather. We have never changed ours.
We're talking about Genuine Hide, obviously, which, for almost 100 years Chiorino has chosen as the scope and benchmark of its production. We have remained faithful to it and its inimitable peculiarities in the course of time and throughout various transformations that have characterized our Company. And yet, in reality we have never ceased to change leather.
It is with Genuine Hide and with Genuine Leather that we have put ourselves to the test over the decades, employing increasingly sophisticated technologies, facing the challenges of tougher markets and thoroughly innovative end uses. We have always believed in and counted on the dynamism of research and the creative energies which it can liberate. The uniqueness of our product and the importance of our clients demonstrate today that such choices were decisive for our growth. An act of loyalty and together an opening towards new horizons. For Chiorino every historical turn has been the demonstration of knowing how to modulate tanning to respond to the needs of the market. From the original production of transmission belts and saddle-ware, to the entry into fields of coating and calendering to our most recent production we have always adapted this traditional craft to the sensitivities of the moment, highlighting the distinctive aspects through investments and technological evolution. This twin impulse has always been Chiorino's guiding light. It has enabled us to occupy and maintain our leading position, while setting ourselves up for a future as true protagonists. Chiorino has obtained the ISO 9002 certification since the beginning of 2001.
Tanning today, according to Chiorino. The tannery is place and space characterized by a high technological content, a series of images that underline the positive evolution of this working environment: this is how we have always imagined, desired and planned our company. We place growth and success in close relationship with investments. This is why we have doubled our production lines and completely automated the plants. The productive capacity of our factory is constantly growing and today is equal to 7.000 square meters of hides per day.
The excellence of our system is well represented by the modern coating lines which enable us to offer our clients absolutely unheard of effects of bicolorism, transparency and naturalness. Our technological sensitivity is also evident in the anti-pollution measures which we have undertaken in recent years with the increase in the potential of our entire waste products treatment plant. Of these, the one which stands out, in all senses, is the recently built tower for the treatment and reduction of exhaust fumes which means that our chimney stacks are in the forefront with respect to current Italian norms and EU guidelines.
The designer was inspired by the comics of Frank Miller, where men of standing always wear hats. He transferred the style of the black and white drawing and strong contrast of light and shadow to the design of the hat, making it with recovered leather from farm animals that is otherwise hard to dispose of. The dyeing is done with natural colours without added chemicals. The label on the interior of the hat is a textile made from the inside of bamboo.

Cappellificio Cervo – Barbisio

Is the Strenght of the tradition of Biella’s masters artisans that make “Cappellificio Cervo S.R.L.” one of the most prestigious companies of the field, to world-wide level. Born in 1897 like cooperative, near the omonimous torrent, Cappellificio Cervo today encloses in its creations the wonders of two celebrated trademarks: Barbisio and Bantam, from which it has inherited the inimitabile style and the great quality.
Entrepreneurial ability and sensibility in comprising and satisfying the demands for a market more and more difficult have made Cappellificio Cervo succeed to exceed the several crises of the field, and to become the quoted company of today, projected with class in the third millenium.
Cappellificio Cervo
The project initiates from the concept of origami: a sheet of paper, a few folds and a form is created. It's a bag, but not just that; it's a sheet of paper, a tablecloth, a games board and much more. Inside it is a folder, which thanks to a modular grid and velcro becomes a comfortable carrying case that can easily be personalised. The simplicity of the initial form allows optimum advantage over the materials, minimising waste.  It is easily dismountable, with a system of junctions and fastenings. Made with biocompatible materials, like felt and pure wool, regenerated leather, recycled polycarbonate, recyclable to 100% or tetrapak, a totaly recyclable material.
A completely personal object like a bag, when opened becomes a social and sharable object.

The series of coasters developed from the concept of eco-compatibility which portray the image of Menabrea, a beer of quality and multiple awards, thanks to the use of that which makes it unique: the main raw materials. The coasters are made up from production refuse: the hops, which give life to the beer and the threshings, which define its body.
No glue or added materials, 100% natural.

The third millennium room talks about connections: not just with technology but also with the earth, our territory and nature. The materials used for the rooms we live in should be natural, like the stratified wood attached with natural, water based glue, eco leather and recyclable steel of this hotel room. Also, the elements in this room serve different functions and this reduces the amount of objects that need to be produced. The chair becomes a table - luggage rack or coffee table, the bedside tables are wired to the television and the stereo system, with the possibility to attach ones own laptop, camera and mp3 player.
The lamps use LEDs and consume the minimum of energy.
The design on the chair and headboard represents the natural environment (flora and fauna) of the location where the room is situated. So in Italy you will find the olive tree or a wolf, an ideal representation of the host country.

The plastic objects, realised with rotational mould printing, are durable and the long life of the object can be considered a kind of eco-sustainability: the object lasts longer and is not thrown away.
Starting from this idea, the object projected creates a new kind of light for outdoors that takes the form of a garden umbrella with a dual function: to protect from the sun’s rays by day and as a light source by night. The umbrella uses clean energy gathered from solar rays thanks to a photo-voltage system and the transformation into luminous energy. Because of this it is completely self sufficient.

In the history of Italian enterprise, Serralunga is a rare example of long-life and capacity for ongoing evolution.
When the Eiffel Tower was unveiled in 1889 the Biella-based company was already 64 years old.
This family-run firm has now come to its third century in business, the V-generation of entrepreneurs and is living a second youth. After its establishment in 1825 as a tannery, in line with the diffusion of machinery, it started manufacturing leather items for industrial purposes, such as driving belts and similar products. In the 1900s, it started processing gutta-percha and later plastic, specialising in the manufacture of industrial articles. In the 1980s, the company imported a rotating plastic injection moulding system from the U.S.A. and was the first in Italy to install a pilot system, with which it started to manufacture flower vases.
The rotating system boasts highly innovative technology, making it possible to manufacture hollow articles with sizes of up to 2000 litres.
The first vases took on the classic forms of the Italian gardening tradition and the colour was similar to terracotta. However, these feature an innovative hollow space that improves soil insulation, they can be manufactured in extra large formats and because of their lightness, they are also ideal for use on balconies and terraces.
Serralunga understood that the oversize dimension was the ace up its sleeve. The next step was to make them beautiful, intriguing and surprising. The key step was the creative encounter between two Biella-born friends: Marco Serralunga an economics graduate and young businessman, who inherited the company from his father and Luisa Bocchietto, designer and architect and disciple of Marco Zanuso.
The passion and business courage of the former combined with the creative flair of the latter revolutionised the company over a 15-year period, projecting it towards the dimension of cutting-edge modern language and lifestyle.
The first steps in the new direction originated from the workshops organised in universities and the dialogue established with Paolo Rizzatto, Alberto Meda and Denis Santachiara, three very different designers who share the same spirit of research and passion for technology. In the ten years that followed, Marco Serralunga and Luisa Bocchietto, staunch upholders of the cultural fertility that characterises Italian design, worked with twenty or so international designers to create a collection with spectacular shapes and new purposes that has become a benchmark and trendsetter in its sector.
The flower vase has been reworked to become a sculpture, a lamp, a landmark, a meeting point between the plant kingdom, furniture and technology. The increasingly fragile and vital divide between indoor and outdoor has become the area of research explored by Serralunga, which, as an independent and verticalised business, owns its own technology, which allows it to experiment, innovate and choose the way forward.
The company’s research combines with the talent of its designers to create new product types: flower vase-lamps, lamp-flower vases, sculpture lamps, flower vase-seats, forest- like flower vases, indoor-outdoor sofas that are rigid yet padded.
Since 1825, the company has manufactured all its products in Italy, at the same address: Via Serralunga 9, Biella in a 12,000-square metre site with 65 direct employees. Here over 1,200 tonnes of plastic are processed every year to make about 200,000 product pieces. Over the past three years, the company’s growth has averaged 25% and the Serralunga brand has become one of the big names in international design.

The collection of Clouded tiles, accentuates the natural effect caused by steam in the bathroom, and looks as though someone has played with the surface, running a finger over the tiles.
The objects recall the natural ephemera of water and the need to conserve it.
